QR Codes in Marketing

We’re sure you’ve seen them around, those crazy looking geometic designs, but what exactly is a QR Code?

QR is short for Quick Response, which is exactly what a QR code is intended to accomplish: allowing users to engage in marketing efforts in a new and quick way to achieve a desired action. Here is a sample of a QR code:

Within this QR code is the information that will direct a user to BillboardEmail, the website for our email deployement service. When it’s scanned with a QR code app, it will direct you to the web address http://www.billboardemail.com.

A camera-equipped smartphone which has the right reading software installed can scan these codes in an instant and then do such things as:

  • Load a web page
  • Receive Contact info
  • Send an SMS
  • Provide geo location
  • Register for a contest
  • Sign up for your newsletter
  • Play a YouTube video
  • Like a fan page on Facebook
  • Add a calendar event
  • Log into a wi-fi network

The QR code is utilized through the camera function of a smartphone. There are many different scanner applications for iPhone, Android, etc. that allows a user to scan the QR code.

Because QR codes are still a novelty to many end users, it is recommended that you include a text version of instructions next to the QR code directing users on what to do and how to use it. Once scanned, the user will automatically access whatever information was stored in the QR code, which is an invaluable tool.
